The Human Cannot Be Replaced
The Human Side of Change™
Issue 01 - July 2026
There is a lot of noise at the moment about AI and what it will take from us. To be honest, I am also curious.
We already see jobs disappearing and roles changing. I am even seeing the term AI anxiety being used. The headlines are relentless.
I have sat across from leaders, HR professionals and individuals in mid-career asking questions like: where do I fit in all of this? What now?
What I know after years of working with people through change is that AI cannot replicate the only thing that has ever mattered -
Human connection.
What gets automated and what doesn’t?
Don’t get me wrong, there are some benefits to AI. Processes get automated and tasks can be streamlined. Some decisions could also be optimised however technology does not have feelings. Nobody has ever felt genuinely seen by an algorithm.
Nobody has ever had their grief held or their courage witnessed by a system that does not have feelings or emotions. AI does not know what it feels like to be afraid.
The human experience of change - confusion, grief or loss - cannot be automated. And more so, the people who can be present and hold space in those moments are not becoming less relevant. They are actually becoming more essential.
What this means if you are navigating change right now
Whether you are leading a team through change, through a restructure, or sitting at your own Crossroads™ asking what comes next, or somewhere in between - the most important thing you can bring to that experience is your humanity. Not a system.
Your ability to feel what is happening and to stay present with other people (and yourself) is what matters most right now.
A question to reflect on:
Where in your life are you trying to replace a human connection with AI? And what is that costing you?
